My dear mother.
yesterday we met the enemy, fighting was hard but we held our ground for several hours, i seen several men fall to withering enemy fire, as they advanced on our positions some men became ripe with fright amd came out of line, one stepped in front of the guns as the fire order was given and received a friendly shot to the head, he was killed instantly.
After some time our flank was exposed and the enemy pushed us from our positions and we were forced to retreat from the field, we fell back but rallied to push back at the enemy to prevent a route.
After this night fell and both army's retired from the field.
How I miss you my dear mother and although I don't wish to die, I am willing to give all for the cause and if called upon die for it.
I hope you are well, give sister my love and i will write you again soon.
